L5 Bistro Looks For Fresh Start

"Everything's different" according to officials at the new eatery in the former home of Stann's on 5th.

When a new restaurant doesn't work out, the tendency is to either tweak the format a bit and hope for a turnaround or go in another direction completely.

Paul Smith chose the later option when it came time to replace the defunct Stann's on 5th, an entertainment themed eatery that was forced to close suddenly last month.

Instead of sticking with the retro entertainment theme, Smith decided to tone the place back; his L5 Bistro has a more relaxed decor and atmosphere he feels is much better suited for the area.

"The biggest difference is the decor, but the food is as fabulous as ever," Smith, who owns the property at 155 5th Avenue North as well as Paul's of Safety Harbor salon next door, said.

"Chef Paul has done a terrific job at keeping the the quality of the menu at a very high level."

'Chef Paul' is Paul Tavares, the lone holdover from the prior establishment and the person who was instrumental in making the transition from the old place to the new as seamless as possible.

As soon as Cherniack decided to close, Tavares began working with Smith on a new concept that would combine the best parts of the old place - the menu - with the intimacy and atmosphere the location provided.

Thus ten days after Stann's on 5th closed, the all-new L5 Bistro opened for business.

"I've noticed people seem to be staying longer because they're more comfortable and more focused on the food and the service," Tavares, who has extensive restaurant experience in the area, said.

"We've added different menu items, more choices for appetizers, a much better beer and wine list," he added. "Everything's different. That was the point."

Smith and Tavares say so far the reception has been terrific, though many people don't even realize they have re-opened due to the quick turnaround.

But they are confident the business will grow as word of mouth spreads.

After all, they have faith in their concept and their product.

"We've got savory food, a great atmosphere and the service is a lot better," Tavares said. "I think this fits a lot better for Safety Harbor."

"People are expecting something nice, to come in and enjoy themselves, and that's exactly what they're getting," Smith said.

"We're here to make their dining experience enjoyable."
