Commission Approves Funding for New Main Street Holiday Decorations

The new holiday decorations that will line Main Street will cost the city around $19,000.

Downtown Safety Harbor could be a little merrier this holiday season as the Safety Harbor Commission unanimously approved funding for new/replacement holiday wreathes for Main Street.

“The wreathes that are being replaced are in dire need of replacement,” city manager Matthew Spoor said at Monday's city commission meeting.

Safety Harbor has been putting this purchase off for the last two-three years, he said.

"The FY 12/13 capital improvement plan allocates $18,000 for the purchase of replacement holiday decorations for Main Street," according to a memo from Andrea Norwood, Leisure Services Director. "The current decorations (wreathes) are over 15 years old, and a majority have reached the end of their useful life."

Of the $19,150 in funding approved for the holiday decoration, Spoor said $18,000 would be coming out of the CRA fund.

Commissioner Nancy Besore said she was reluctant to approve the funding but decided to support the measure because the holiday decorations are a part of what makes Safety Harbor a special place to live.

“In my mind … it’s really important to Safety Harbor,” Besore said. “It’s a quality of thing.”

According to city documents, the usable remaining decorations will be used in a new decoration scheme/plan. The new wreathes will be retrofitted onto the existing pole mounts along Main Street.

The design of the wreathe was selected in early September by the parks and recreation advisory board.
