Art of Glass Explored at Syd Entel Galleries

The downtown Safety Harbor gallery is currently hosting an exhibit dedicated to the history of studio glass.

Art can come in many forms.

One of the great things about Safety Harbor is we get to experience many of those forms, from chalkĀ and music to sculpture and even words.

Another form of art is currently on display at Syd Entel Galleries, and after witnessing the '50 Years and Beyond' exhibit, you'll never look at glass the same way again.

"I've never had a glass show in all the years I've owned the gallery," Susan Benjamin. "I mean I've always had the glass gallery next door, but I never crossed my glass work with my art work."

That has changed with this exhibit, which celebrates the past, present and future of studio glass.

The collection includes multiple pieces by studio glass artists from all over the world; all the pieces are for sale, and many will remain at the gallery after the show ends on May 11.

"I asked my glass artists if they would send me two of their favorite pieces to display, and that's how I created the whole exhibit," Benjamin said.

"Usually you see glass displayed alone on pedestals, but that's not how I roll," she added, noting that the pieces are grouped with painting and other works that serve to complement their appearances and styles.

The show is already drawing plenty of attention, including coverage in the Tampa Bay Times and an appearance by Fox 13's Charley Belcher this week.

Benjamin also said she has had some of her busiest non-opening days for this exhibit, and after seeing some of the exquisite and unique pieces, it's no wonder why.

"Art is art and glass is glass," Benjamin said. "But as you can see, glass can be fun, it can be intricate and it can be beautiful."

The '50 Years and Beyond' exhibit runs through May 11 at Syd Entel Galleries, located at 247 Main Street in downtown Safety Harbor.
