Downtown Farmer’s Market One of Safety Harbor’s Hidden Gems

The weekly event at John Wilson Park is still going on after 15 years despite changing times and dwindling attendance.

The majority of outdoor events that occur in downtown Safety Harbor are both well attended and well publicized.

But hidden behind all the 3rd Fridays, holiday parades, trick-or-treats and tree lightings, one small event has been persevering for more than 15 years despite little fanfare.

Safety Harbor Farmer’s Market founder Bob Fernandez says he’s not about to close his event, held every Thursday at John Wilson Park, despite his advancing age and declining attendance.

“I’ve been doing this for 15 years - we used to be down at Harbor Pointe when it was a field,” the 77-year-old said. “It used to be much bigger, but the economy collapse dictated some changes.”

“Instead of just produce and plants, I’ve had to bring in jewelry, clothing, other foods, whatever I can to keep it going.”

One of his loyal vendors, Jane Smith of Anatolian Jewelry, said she has been coming here from Tampa for six years because she loves the area and she respects her landlord.

“I love this little town, and Mr. Fernandez is the best landlord I could ask for,” Smith said. “But we sure could use some more exposure.”

Fernandez, who also runs a similar market in downtown Clearwater, said he has no plans to close this one despite the recent difficulties.

In fact, he says the support he gets from the city coupled with his love for what he does will keep him here indefinitely.

“The city has been 100% supportive. They want to see me succeed,” he said.

“It gets harder and harder to do it every year, but I enjoy doing it. I plan on doing it until I can’t do it any more.”
