The votes were cast, the ballots have been counted and the readers of Safety Harbor Patch have spoken: the most popular story of 2012 was our article about the closing of Captain's Pizza due to health code violations.
The story not only garnered the most votes in our recent unscientific poll, but it also received numerous page views, Facebook recommendations, comments and also spawned a number of follow-up pieces.
The Captain's saga recently came to a conclusion with the news that the owners of the Main Street Market bought the old building and are planning to reopen it as a surf & turf market/cafe.
Bill Bailey paid tribute to the pizzeria's owner, Steve Capitano, when he talked to Patch about transforming the place into a new symbol of the downtown district.
"My hat's off to Steve. He's an icon in the community," Bailey said. "He's the type of guy who made this community what it is today."
